Lupine

Biomaterial Design |

Collaborative Project with Xuefei Shi

The project surrounded material experimentation on Lupine, an non-native species to Northern Europe. As Lupine is now labeled as one among the most harmful invasive plants in Helsinki and the removal of the plants had been locally initiated throughout the region, this material research hoped to find potential use of Lupine as a biomaterial before the plant is being disposed of.
Bigleaf Lupine, Lupinus polyphyllus, had been known for its initial use as an ornamental plant and soil fertilizer in Northern Europe. Its rapid growth had become problematic as it disrupted the ecosystem of the native species. The most recent campaign by the City of Espoo and Helsinki encouraged residents to earn a small sum of money with Crowdsorsa mobile app by eradicating Lupine and Himalayan Balsams in their residential areas(Daily Finland, 2024).
