Lignin Foam
Biomaterial Design
Exhibition: Design for Cooler Planet, Aalto University (2025)
The project started from a combination of my two personal interests; the material properties of lignin and the aim to explore casting with bio-material.
In the field of art and design, production of artefacts led to my personal question towards my own practice. As an art and design practitioner, I am aware of the amount of non-biodegradable waste generated during the prototyping, and casting process of an artefact. This reflection towards my own practice has led me to explore castability of the cellulose, lignin biomaterial.
Lignin as a material held potentials to enhance strength and durability of the cellulose-based biometerials. Its abundance as a side-stream from the pulping industry attracted me as the material to explore. Ultimately, my own art and design artefacts were largely sculptures from cellulose-based materials. Thus, lignin appeared to be an ideal material to experiment with.
